Deep Steam Carpet & Upholstery cleaning began 45 years ago when my dad, Kurt Sloan, saw an opportunity in the industry. At the time, only Jack’s Carpet Cleaning was on Maui, and being the motivated self-starter that he was, my dad started his own business!
His first machine was very humble. My dad was very creative and akamai with money, and the portable cleaning unit he built was nowhere near the level of technology we now have in our truck today. But he did everything with excellence. Quickly, he built a loyal customer base and began to grow his little company.
As his clientele and knowledge base grew, so did his services. From basic carpet and floor cleaning services, he added upholstery specialty and flood removal. Growing up, my brother and sister and I all learned the trade and made some money helping Dad. Mom, whom everyone knows as Betsy, ran the office and did all the bookkeeping and scheduling. As Dad began to slow down, she started working with him to assist.
Forty years after founding Deep Steam, Kurt wanted to retire. I asked if I could take over the business, and he agreed! In 2018, his company changed hands to the next generation, and we began operating Deep Steam. One of the first things I did was take Mom’s paper filing system and digitalized it. This streamlined our scheduling and bookkeeping process big time! My dad was an invaluable resource during our changeover. I wanted to keep the same level of excellence that his clients were used to!
Dad’s sunset was September 28th, 2024… although it’s been several months now, the void his presence left behind is still felt every day. His dry and “punny” sense of humor is sorely missed. His deep wealth of information and his advice will always be treasured.
We imua in 2025! Our goal is to keep Deep Steam growing and thriving as we bring up the next generation, Kurt and Betsy’s grandkids in the family business.
